Mini Fruit Tarts with Phyllo (Filo) Dough Cups

Blueberries, Strawberry, & Mandarins This post is so late in coming.. I know I wanted to make mini fruit tart, and I was being lazy so I planned on buying the pre-made tarts shells, but alas they did not have it at the store. So I just bought some filo dough and thought I'd make do. For those of you who might not know, filo dough is what you make baklava with.
Step 1: Custard (recipe courtesy of Salad in a Jar) Microwave Custard FillingIngredients:
2 1/4 cups milk (I used 2%  but any milk will work, even skim)
4 egg yolks
2/3 cup sugar
1/4 cup cornstarch
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 tablespoons butter Directions:
Dump milk, egg yolks, sugar, cornstarch and salt into blender or food processor.  You could also whisk it well but results may not be as smooth.  Blend for about 10 seconds.  There may be a lot of foam.  That’s OK–it will disappear when cooked.

Second: Pour into 2-quart glass batter bowl.  (DO NOT USE A SMALLER CONTAINER–it could boil over and…

Authentic Italian Food in LA area

restaurant review

This past weekend I headed over to Gardena with some friends from out of town.  I had heard about this place from a friend before, but never had a chance to go.
I HEART ITALY! The pizza in Italy was so different from anything I'd ever had in America, so crispy and thin, you order 1 per person!
So imagine my delight when I got here and they looked so authentic!

The restaurant is very industrious looking. I think they took and old warehouse and made a restaurant out of it. They have an espresso machine and a gelato bar...

They bread they serve is nothing spectacular, but...

We first ordered a Spinach & Ricotta Ravioli in a Butter Sage sauce.
SO SIMPLE, yet so delicious.
The family we stayed with while in Italy actually made this for us.
They just boiled the pasta then tossed it in a pan that had melted butter and sage leaves.

PIZZA! Yes, it tastes just like Italy! The size is small, so I think you could definitely eat this by yourself. We jus…

Neapolitan Cake Pops - Heart Shapes & Butterflies

Hi! Be prepared.. this is a long one. I did this for a BIG GROUP, so it took me 3 days. Not 3 WHOLE days, but now that I'm back at work, I only have time at night. So, three nights. I made Neapolitan cake pops, in various forms & colors.

So! For the instructions, here goes!

Day One - Baking the Cakes
On the first night, I baked 3 cakes. (Vanilla, Strawberry, & Chocolate) for a Neapolitan flavor.
Usually a box of mix makes about 30-40 pops. I wanted to make about 75, so I thought "Why not just make 120?" so three cakes.

I use box mix, because this is already enough work in itself without making the cake too. Besides, I love Betty Crocker mix because it has pudding in it, and it makes it oh so moist.
Just bake all according to directions. Make sure you have all the ingredients at home (eggs, oil, butter) - I had to run to the store 2 times in between. UGH! After baking, crumble into crumbs:
The holes were just to check if they were done. Just stick a chopstick in…

Haagen Daz Caramel Cone ice cream...

Beignets and Snowball @ Jazz Kitchen Express

Jazz Kitchen Express  Today, I stopped by Downtown Disney during lunch to buy some tickets.
It was around 94 degrees today, so I stopped by Jazz Kitchen Express to try out their New Orleans style Snowballs and Beignets.

The snowball is basically like a SnoCone: shaved ice with flavored syrup. I wish I got a prettier one for the picture. I got the coconut flavor, so it's white. It was really refreshing on this scorching hot day. Not too syrupy, and I liked the texture of the ice too. $2.99
Beignets! These are like a donut. They are freshly fried and served to order. The minimum you can get is 4 for $4.99. They are about 2in X 2in. They come in a white paper bag and are sitting on a bed of powdered sugar. Eat this OUTSIDE or at a table, it will get all over your clothes and car. I guess you are supposed to shake the bag. When I got them they were hot and delish!!! I took a bite, and YUMMMMMMYY!! dip back into sugar and another bite! and another! and another! Where'd it all go!? …

Caffe Concerto Macarons & Cupcakes

Do you want macarons?!! then come here... my goodness there are a lot! I walked in here and RAN to the back of the store. My heart quickened.. HEAVEN!!!! AHHHHH They are so preeeettty!. This place is in Koreatown, LA off of Serano and 6th street. I initially saw it while at the restaurant next door, but it was closed that time. So, I made a mental note to come back. Glad I did.

They had samples!!! He said you would like some? "hmmmmmm... sure... >:D"
and then he LEFT to do something!! Not a good idea sir... I'm pretty sure I ate about $10 worth of samples in the time that he was gone. MUHAHAHAHA Why are these so beautiful to me? We decided to go upstairs cuz it was pretty hot that day. The decor is really cute. Pretty nice for groups. I don't really think it's a study place because it was quite fancy. I love their chairs! We ordered espresso, cupcakes, and more macarons. Going from left to right:
Salted caramel macaron, Olive cupcake, Vanilla macaron, Strawb…
