Black Seafood Paella, Macarons, and Red Velvet Cake

Image
Have you ever tried squid ink? We tried this place at the Farmer's market at the Grove. They have regular Seafood Paella and also this Arroz Negro which is the same thing but with squid ink. I thought it would be grayish, so you can imagine my horror when I saw this come out.

We pretty much just stared at it, stared at each other, then stared at it again. I ventured a bite.. and it was scary to even put in my mouth. Thankfully, it was delish!
If you close your eyes and eat it, it's suppppper good. HAHA It comes with a side of garlic sauce/paste. We had to get more. The dish is really buttery and good. It had shrimp, scallops, mussels, and they were all very generous portions. Sharon looked over and me and just cracked up. This stuff is messy! Don't get it on your clothes. I dropped some on my skirt, but it came out with some cleaner. I'd still be careful. They also have an angel hair pasta with seafood and squid ink. We'll try that next time. Oh, the price was $16…

Potato Chips & Ketchup - I'm serious

Image
HI!
Just a quick post. Studying is hard work!
This is a great/yummy snack.
You eat french fries with ketchup right?
POTATO CHIPS! it's good!

I like to cut a little hole in the middle of the packet, then bend it and squeeze it out. Like the mustard sauce in deluxe lunchables that you only got during field trips.
 One more suggestion.
You want a dip? KETCHUP AND SOUR CREAM. omg. it's so good.
Don't say eww until you try it.
HAHAHA Enjoy!!

Cream Puffs (Pate Choux)

Image
Hello! I decided to try and MAKE something at least once a week, and the rest can just be whatever I feel like. This one was a little more complicated than the other things I tried, but after eating some baby choux at Paris Baguette, I wanted to try it!

Sorry my pictures are not that great. It's all with my iPhone 4.. not even S. So please forgive!

So for the cream puff shells, I used this recipe:
Cream Puff Shell Recipe to print
Basically the ratio is 1:1:1:1 (1 cup water, 1 stick butter, 1 cup flour, 1 cup of eggs)

ingredients:1 cup water1 stick butter (1/2 cup)1 cup all purpose flour1 good pinch of salt1 cup eggs (4 large eggs)

directions:
Preheat oven 425F. 1. In a medium pot, bring the water and butter to a simmer on medium heat.

Add the flour and with a wooden spoon or spatula, stir very quickly in one direction. Carefully watch and you'll see that the flour starts absorbing the liquid -- and a dough will form. Keep stirring to continue cooking the flour and cook off some of…

Popcorners & Cocola Bakery Macarons Review

Image
Have you guys tried this?! It's so good! Sheena bought it at the airport in a vending machine. Never tried it before, but it's quite tasty. The texture is crispy and light, not that crunchy. The white cheddar flavor is definitely there. I really want to try the kettle and butter flavor.

In San Jose, there is a bakery called Cocola at Santana Row. If I ever see macarons, I'mma buy macarons. They were $1.25 each, $16 for 15!  They have giant ones for $2.60 each.

Flavors (top to bottom) are Passion fruit, Raspberry, Pistachio, Coffee & Chocolate.

My review is that they were great. The price was so reasonable too. In Paris, you can pay up to $3 for one macaron (a little one!) The cookie was nice and chewy, and the filling was good. Not too sweet, but sweet enough to enjoy with a cup of black coffee. I like to put mine in the freezer and eat after thawing for 5 minutes. Macaron ice cream! I'll definitely go back if ever I'm in the area.

Free Soul Caffe & Little Sheep Vegan Cupcakes & Mongolian Hot Pot Review

Image
After my Chinese class on Saturday, I found this vegan bakery/cafe. Anyone who knows me, knows I'm a carnivore, but I thought it'd be fun to try something new. Usually, the words "Vegan" and "Vegetarian" instantly make me think it's going to be nasty, but it had great reviews so we stopped by. It's in old town Tustin, near the 5 & 55 Freeway.
Free Soul Caffe

The cafe itself was really spacious, clean and cute. I'd totally hang out there.
There were so many goodies to pick from, I'm amazed that they can make so many vegan options!
Cupcakes, I'm going to try the red velvet next time. It was really light and fluffy. The icing layer was thin and not too sweet. Didn't taste fake or vegany at all. :D
Very creamy, tart and exactly what a raspberry cheesecake would taste like. It's not as rich or anything, but pretty darn good.

This one tastes pretty much like a Reese's peanut butter cup with an oreo crust. mmmm

Pistachio Cake Pops

Image
I know I already did a pistachio cupcake, but this time they are cake pops. I was going to make some pina colada cupcakes, but I forgot all my cupcake things at home. I'm house sitting, so I thought I'd just go with something that you don't need a lot of materials for.

I pretty much used the same recipe for the cupcakes:
Ingredients1 box of Betty Crocker white cake mix2 (3.5 ounce) packages instant pistachio pudding1 cup vegetable oil3 large eggs1 cup club soda DirectionsPreheat oven to 350 degrees and place cupcake liners in cupcake pan.Mix cake mix, eggs, oil, 1 package pistachio pudding, and club soda in a large bowl and beat for 3 minutes.Pour into cake pan and bake.Cool completly

After the cake cooled, I took off all the crust and crumbled it into crumbs. (I ate a lot of the edges, they are my fav!) I didn't want the pops to have brown in the middle.

The recipe for the icing is:
Ingredients1 (3.5 ounce) packages instant pistachio pudding2 cups heavy cre…
